#eventgoer: The Photographer

Hi! My name is Max McFocus. I’m an event goer. Wait a sec… OK, I got it. Sorry about that but the composition was just perfect and I had to take the shot.

#eventgoer: The Photographer

You will see me at events like virtually all of them. Fairs, festivals, academic and business conferences, weddings. Any event, regardless of the type, will benefit from having a photographer. The organizer put a lot of effort and money into that event. It would be a shame if nobody documented it. Even more so when you can use pictures to promote the next edition of the event.

I pay particular attention to lighting. If the sun is out, that’s the best lighting possible. You can get cool effects with colored mood lighting as well. The most important thing is that it’s not too dark. Otherwise, the pictures may come out grainy.

I expect to be paid on time and credited on the photos. I don’t expect anything else.

I’m annoyed when someone nudges me or bombs the photo. Don’t be alarmed, I can handle it, remain professional and ensure the attendee nothing happened. Attendee satisfaction is important to me as well. And I’m not really the type of guy to lash out on people. It’s just mildly frustrating.

What I like most is shooting at fantasy conventions. Attendees often dress up as movie and video game characters. It’s nice to see something different once in a while. And they love to pose.

Thank you for your time and insight, Max. Photographers are an important part of any event. They create content that you can use to promote the event and engage the attendees. They are eager to browse pictures of events they attended and just as eager to share these pictures with friends. Max didn’t mention it but it’s worth noting that a photographer should have unobstructed access to all areas of the event. You should give him some kind of badge. Whether it empowers him to enter any area without being bothered by the staff, or has a QR code with all sub-events assigned - it’s up to you. The priority is not to disrupt his work and he’ll take care of the rest. Look forward to another event goer soon!
